Firearm at Elementary School

New Braunfels, Texas — On today’s date (04-18-17), at approximately 7:50am, officers with the New Braunfels Police Department responded to County Line Elementary School in the 1200 block of West County Line Road for a report that a child had a firearm in their school bag while on campus. The loaded handgun was discovered by the student (an 8-year old female) when she opened up the bag to start the school day. The student immediately notified her teacher, who took possession of the bag and immediately turned it over to campus administration, who, in turn, immediately notified police. At no point was the firearm displayed and students were likely unaware that it was ever even on campus. NBPD officers made contact with the student’s parent who advised they had inadvertently left the firearm in the child’s bag during a recent move. The parent took full responsibility for the incident and, because there was no intent to commit any other offenses, they were issued a citation for Making a Firearm Accessible to a Child (TPC 46.13), which is a Class C Misdemeanor. NBPD would like to praise the quick action of campus and district officials for how this situation was handled, and would like to caution all gun owners about the seriousness of keeping their firearms secured and away from children.
