Published on Sep 09, 2014 / Local News
(New Braunfels, TX) -- 17-year-old New Braunfels High School student Shayna Underwood will be honored tonight in Austin by The University of Texas Health Science Center’s School of Public Health for her efforts to reduce childhood obesity. Underwood was recently named the 2014-2015 Ambassador for Children’s Health through the Alliance for a Healthier Generation after persuading the New Braunfels ISD to adopt a healthier lunch menu and start an outdoor program to encourage more physical activity for students. Underwood will be honored with the Rising Star Award, which is given each year to a young Texan who has demonstrated leadership in their local community to raise awareness about obesity. Rising Star winners also get a full scholarship to attend the Southern Obesity Summit in Louisville, Kentucky next month. Tonight’s awards ceremony will be held at the Michael & Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living in Austin.
