Community Recreation Center Groundbreaking Set for Friday, October 14th

New Braunfels, Texas –

The City of New Braunfels invites you to the groundbreaking ceremony for the New Braunfels Community Recreation Center on Friday, October 14th. The event will be held at 345 Landa Street, site of the future facility. Parks & Recreation Director Stacey Dicke notes the ceremony will mark the start of construction for a state-of-the-art recreational space.  “Once completed, the center will provide greatly needed recreation opportunities to the entire community.” The total construction budget for the project is $23.5 million. $15.69 million of which is funded by the 2013 Bond Program, and $5.8 million by the New Braunfels Industrial Development Corporation (4B Board). New Braunfels Independent School District is contributing $2.2 million for the eight lane competition pool, of which $1 million is in reserve for future operations and maintenance.

That ceremony is at 10am., next Friday at 345 Landa Street.

The 74,000 square foot facility will offer a variety of amenities including a double gymnasium, classrooms, fitness area, an indoor walking track and locker/shower areas. The water recreation side will include lap lanes, a resistance/current channel, preschool play features, play slides and spray features. In addition, the wet side of the facility will include an eight lane competition pool.

The Community Recreation Center project is a part of the City of New Braunfels 2013 Bond Program, approved by voters in May 2013. In December 2013, City Council approved a contract with Brinkley Sargent Wiginton Architects for design services, with Counsilman-Hunsaker serving as aquatic design consultant specialists. Public engagement efforts ensued, including a series of public input meetings and the formation of a seven member steering committee.

In April 2014, City Council selected Landa Plaza as the site for the new center. In August 2015, City Council approved a contract with Byrne Construction Services for pre-construction services and in September 2016, City Council approved a Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) contract with Byrne Construction Services for construction of the facility.
