Ex-Firefighter Receives 60 Year Sentence For 2011 Murder

(Austin, TX) -- KEYE-TV reports that 30-year-old former Pedernales Volunteer Firefighter Joe Carr is heading to prison, receiving a 60-year-sentence yesterday after a guilty found him guilty of killing his girlfriend in 2011 and dumping her body in Lake Travis. Carr’s trial concluded on Tuesday, and a Travis County Jury handed him his sentence yesterday, 60 years for the murder of 22-year-old Veronica Navarro and 20 years for the tampering with evidence charge and both terms will run concurrently. Prosecutors say that Navarro’s body was found in Lake Travis on July 6th of 2011, wrapped in a tent and weighted down with a paint can. Carr was arrested at the Canadian border three days after Navarro’s body was discovered. Prosecutors believe Carr was jealous Navarro was going to start dating another man.
